Honouring two pioneers of Indian diabetology
The symposium is dedicated to Padma Shri Late Prof. M. M. S. Ahuja and Padma Vibhushan Late Prof. J. S. Bajaj — visionary leaders whose contributions laid the foundation of diabetes care and research in India.
Prof. M. M. S. Ahuja
1929 – 1998
Former Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Dean, AIIMS, New Delhi. Played a key role in founding the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (1972) and the Hormone Foundation, India; founding editor of the International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries.
B. C. Roy Award for Medical Research (1982)
Prof. J. S. Bajaj
1936 – 2019
Member (Health), Planning Commission with the rank of Minister of State (1991–98). Professor and Head of Medicine, AIIMS; honorary physician to the President of India (1977–82, 1987–92) and consultant physician to the Prime Minister (1991–96). Doctorate in Medicine conferred by the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm; Fellow of the Royal Colleges of London and Edinburgh.
India's second-highest civilian award
